Whether you are a student planning weekends or a faculty member planning course field trips, public transportation can save you lots of money and provide plenty of entertainment.

When you are looking for places to stay, it is good to plan early because June and July are high season, and many places fill with school groups. Reservations are a good idea.

Travel By Rail

Railways in Great Britain

British Rail: Buy your rail pass and plan your trips from the British Rail website. Often, Britrail pass is built-in as part of the expenses of the RWC British Study Program.

Railways in Europe

Some rail companies in europe are Deustchebahn and SNCF (France). There are several different kinds of Eurail passes for different combinations of countries. The Channel Tunnel Train called the Eurostar is a good alternative to getting to the continent from the U.K.

Rail Passes

Rail Passes such as the Britrail pass are only available in the United States and need to be bought from a travel agent before leaving for the U.K. You can buy rail passes for the U.K., or for Europe. Rail passes are only good for discounts on the channel tunnel Eurostar train.

Accommodations

Most Tourist Information Centers in big cities, at the sign of the blue italic "I", will book rooms for you when you arrive. However, smaller towns may not have such service. Lowest cost is camping: look for the tent signs on your O.S. map. Next least expensive are Youth Hostels. You must buy your Youth Hostel Membership in the U.S. before you leave, and your membership is good all over the world. Getting more expensive are Bed and Breakfast accomodations, for which there are a ton of guides, and finally there are hotels. Hotels will be expensive, but you do have a chance, though not a guarrantee, of a private bathroom.
