The cultures of England and the Midwestern United States seem similar enough at first glance, that it may come as a suprise when you suddenly come upon the places where they do not overlap at all. Some junctures may seem charming such as the possibility of a nice cup of tea anywhere you go, but others may seem incomprehensibly confusing such as the many uses of the word, "Cheers.".

The best advice in situations of cultural ambiguity is to keep an open observant mind.

British and American English

Winston Churchill is reputed to have commented that Britian and America are two nations divided by a common language. Listen carefully: the words you are hearing may not mean what you are used to them meaning. Sometimes pronunciation can be the first hurdle. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification if you aren't sure what's going on. Also, in the United States, people speak more loudly than people in other countries. Adjust your volume for your surroundings.

Food

Eating at Harlaxton Manor and during your travels may introduce you to food you don't recognize, or novel combinations of food you do recognize. Try new things at least once, and then ask what they are.

Pub Customs

Going to the pub is time-honored social custom that is not quite like going to a bar. There is good food and there are good things to drink. You usually order at the bar and pay at the bar. Be polite and you'll learn a lot.

Social Niceties

Polite social amenities are very important for British social interactions. Say hello and shake hands. Say thank you, you're welcome, and good-bye.
