Course Offerings for 2008
Latin American Culture and Civilization 28-SPAN 261 This study abroad program is a two-week intensive language, culture and travel program in Costa Rica. The pre-requisite is one year of university Spanish study or the equivalent. This course will be taught in Spanish and will concentrate on speaking fluency. We will practice conversation, grammar, reading, writing, and idioms. In addition to a formal text, we will also study local newspapers, magazines, videos, and other items of current popular culture. This course has two components: instruction and excursions. In the mornings, you will study with other members of the Intercultura Institute. Then you will have a special session with Professor Deborah Themudo covering special topics in Latin American Culture. Classes consist of no more than six students, run from 8:30-12:30 daily, and the afternoon excursions will include a butterfly farm, a coffee plantation, the Poas and Barva volcanos, as well as a weekend visit to a beach and a national park. There will also be a one credit hour service learning opportunity.
