Foreign Language Requirement

If a student has a foreign language requirement in his/her program, it may be satisfied with one of two options:

OPTION 1

(Note that this option is made up of one sequence of three, 5-cr. courses to satisfy the foreign language requirement.)

OPTION 2

(Note that this option is made up of two sequences, each containing three, 3-cr. courses, to satisfy the foreign language requirement.)

Completion of the “Elementary  French/German/Spanish” sequence,

5 credit hour courses.

A.    Completion of the “Beginning American Sign Language/French/German/Spanish” or “Elementary  Chinese/Japanese” sequence, 3 credit hour courses.

AND

B.    Completion of the “Intermediate American Sign Language/ Chinese/ French/ German/ Japanese/Spanish, 3 credit hour courses.

 Examples
Example 1:  Students with no prior study of a foreign language, or who do not test into a course beyond the first course in either option would register for one of the following, depending on the number of credit hours the student is able to carry:
Elementary French/German/Spanish 104
OR
Beginning American Sign Language/French/German/Spanish or Elementary Chinese/Japanese 101

Example 2:  Students with significant high school or life-experience exposure to a foreign language AND with a placement test score indicating placement in an advanced class would register for the course indicated on the placement test results.  For example, if a student places into the Intermediate sequence, the student would register for the Intermediate 201. 202 or 203, depending on the placement test results.  That student’s foreign language requirement would be satisfied with successful completion of the Intermediate sequence.

In addition, up to 10 credits would be granted upon successful completion (with a grade of "C" or better) of the first course taken.  For example, a student testing into 201 would receive 9 foreign language credits (for 101, 102, and 103) upon completion of 201 with a "C" or better.  A student testing into 106 would receive 10 foreign language credits (for 104 and 105) upon completion of 106 with a "C" or better.

“Place out” of part/all of the Foreign Language Requirement

Students who place into a course beyond the Elementary 104 or Beginning/Elementary 101 level, must only complete the Foreign Language Requirement Option into which they are placed to satisfy the foreign language requirement.  There is no minimum number of hours which must be completed.

Students who place into a course other than first in either of sequences, and who successfully complete that course with a grade of "C" or better will be awarded up to 10 credits (up to two 5-cr. courses or three 3-cr courses).

If a student “places out” completely, it means that he/she has sufficient knowledge of a foreign language to be exempt from one of the two options listed above, and no foreign language course is required.  No foreign language credit is given, and the student must still complete the credit hours required for graduation in his/her program.
