The
College Study Skills and Reading Center is used mostly, but not
exclusively, by students taking College Study Skills, Preparatory
Reading and Writing, and College Reading.
In tutor room
(112K), students receive one-on-one attention to acquire college-level
reading and study skills. Reading topics can include comprehension,
vocabulary, and critical thinking as well as other related skills.
Organization, time management, taking notes, reading textbooks,
learning terms, improving memory, using learning styles, setting
goals, solving problems, managing stress, test-taking, and developing
study techniques are study skills topics that tutors can address
when helping students develop more effective and efficient study
habits. Tutors can also provide assistance in most academic subjects
and help students improve their test scores in any course with
a test review.
In the lab
(112L), students work independently, at their own pace in a non-stressful
environment to improve the same reading and study skills that
tutors address. With student input, individualized programs are
designed and developed according to a student's needs and abilities.
Pre and post-assessments of reading, study skills and spelling
are used to measure performance and improvement.
All services
are free of charge and available by appointment or walk-in.

The Writing Lab provides a variety of resources on all aspects
of the writing process. Tutors can help students to get started
with a writing assignment and to revise a paper. Tutors aid students
by showing them techniques about writing well-organized and well-developed
paragraphs, essay, and term papers. However, tutors will not proofread
papers. Additional resources such as handouts, textbooks, and
diagnostic software are available for students who want to improve
their sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Tutors
will work individually with a student to plan a course of action
to meet the students need.
