Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire

Sherwood Forest is about a hour away from Harlaxton and offers a myriad of activities. The Education Centre there is staffed by thoughtful, helpful, enthusiastic young people who seem to really like their jobs.

Here is the Major Oak, thought to be about 800 years old or so. It is the literary centerpiece to a larger conservation project that seeks to maintain this last old oak forest. There is also a meadow that has been clear for about that amount of time.

The Sherwood Forest Visitor's Centre is very well done as it balances myth and fact in its discussion of the association of the Robin Hood myth with the forest.

There is also a very thoughtful and informative exhibit on Forests of the World and conservation efforts in each different kind of forest.

In addition to the literary and conservation educational activities in the forest, there is also an orienteering course. The educational facilities conduct orienteering classes on this course.

A great place to stay overnight in Sherwood Forest is at the Sherwood Forest Youth Hostel. It is a ten minutes walk from the Forest Visitor's Centre, and three minutes walk from the lovely town of Edwinstowe, which has won a Best Village prize. In addition, next door to the hostel is a local craft center.
