Pre-history and Roman Britain
The most famous stone circles to visit are near Salisbury. There are buses from the Salisbury Rail Station to Stonehenge and Avebury. These sites are about a 4-6 hour drive from Harlaxton and may be best accessed by public transportation.
Closer to home in Creswell are the Creswell Crags, a limestone gorge with Ice-Age human occupations.
In York, there is the Archaeological Resource Centre home to the Jorvik Viking Centre.
The Association for Roman Archaeology is a group dedicated to preserving the Roman heritage in Britain. They organize tours and offer volunteer opportunities on local sites.

Caudwell's Mill, Rowsley: Derbyshire's unique flour mill. The only complete Victorian water turbine-powered roller mill in the country.

Papplewick Pumping Station: an outstanding example of ornate Victorian architecture and one of the finest working period waterworks in Europe. Nottinghamshire.

Althorp: the collection of material culture associated with Diana, Princess of Wales, Northampton.
Grenanda Studios: Europe's Largest Film and Television Park, Manchester.
Notable Local Cathedrals
St. Wulfram's Church in Grantham, begun in 1180, restored in 1851. Architectural and History pamphlets available on reserve.
Ely Cathedral, Ely, Cambridgshire. Begun in 1081.
York Cathedral, York, Yorkshire.
Notable Local Castles and Grand Houses
Belvoir Castle: The Leicestershire Home of the Duke of Rutland. Five miles from Harlaxton, this castle makes a pleasant afternoon outing. The Queen's Royal Lancers Museum is situated within the castle and special events take place most Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Lincoln Castle, Lincolnshire: One of the first great castle built by William the Conqueror, begun in 1068. The Castle hosts a program of events and historical re-enactments.
Haddon Hall: The Derbyshire Home of the Duke of Rutland. Craft Fair in late June. Lovely gardens.

"A Traveller in Time: Country Houses of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire" This pamphlet lists local English Heritage Houses.
